VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP | BANGKOK 

Urban Settlement and Planning

Three sub-areas defined by the settlement forms and characteristics:

  • Khlong/Klong Ong Ang : New reclamation project and canal restoration, community participation activities with extended MRT accessibility. Recently, it won a 2020 Asian Townscape Awards from UN-Habitat Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. It is located in the southern part of Rob Krung canal.
  • Banglamphu : Multicultural community: Thai, Chinese, Mon, and Muslim cultures. It has mixed types of landuse, various human activities and long history of settlement
    development from paddle field, royal craftsmanship, various types of markets, tourist destination and nightlife respectively. It is situated in the northernmost part of Rob Krung canal and along Chao Phraya River.
  • Yaowarat (China Town) : OId Chinese community with Chinese living styles, street foods and markets with MRT accessibility.

    Three sub-areas in Sham Shui Po District showing a transect from the newly developed area to the old community:

    • Newly developed community above Nam Cheong MTR Station (near the coast) (highlighted in blue)
    • Community with a mix of old and new development (active urban redevelopment activities) (highlighted in yellow)
    • Old community dominated by Chinese tenement buildings and street markets (highlighted in orange)

    The study area encompasses the whole Lai Chi Wo village and the coastal part of the area.

    • Lai Chi Wo village – village open spaces, key buildings and features (e.g. Siu Ying Primary School, Hip Tin Kung and Hok Shan Che), village houses and paths
    • Coastal area – area with mangrove and coastal landscape

    Water Resource Management

    Lin Thin stream is a natural river, originated from subterranean stream appearing at small opening channel from limestone mountains.

    Subareas:

    • Upstream of Lin Thin catchment
    • Sub catchment of Nikuhu
    • Midstream of Lin Thin
    • Downstream of Lin Thin

    VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP | SHAN PUI RIVER WATERSHED, HONG KONG 

    Water Resource Management

    The study area is in Shan Pui River Watershed, Hong Kong.

    Subareas:

    • Upstream: The dominant land use and land cover type is woodland. Topographical gradient is steep. One reservoir, Wong Nai Tun reservoir, locates in this area.
    • Middle stream: It locates in the transition area between the mountainous region and the Yuen Long city. The land use and land cover types are agricultural land, rural settlement and concrete river channel. Topographical gradient becomes gentle.
    • Downstream: It locates in the flood plain region including Yuen Long city, Nam Sang Wai wetland and Shan Pui River outlet. The land use and land cover types are urban land, wetland, fish pond, concrete river channel and bypass floodway. Topography is flat.
